The service manual, a mirror

The first factory document lands in the library, and it arrives with an asterisk: this is not paper on this bench. It is the scan of the X-150D service manual that has circulated online since at least 2008, red evaluation watermark and all, mirrored here exactly as found and transcribed in full — twelve of its thirteen chapters of specifications, adjustment procedures, parts tables and troubleshooting charts, now searchable.

Transcribing a whole manual page by page teaches you its gaps. This scan has one that matters: chapter XII, the schematic diagram, is simply not there — the one page a service manual exists to carry. So the hunt list reorders itself: an original service manual, or even a lone legible schematic page, now sits at the top.

The specifications chapter also settled this site's specs page, which had been standing empty on principle until a citable source arrived. It also delivered one detail worth a grin: the factory transistor list includes the 2SC458 — a part with a reputation, and now a documented resident of this machine.

Update, August 2026: a second scan of the manual surfaced — a different printing, Akai document code S-EN1-960, with color plates where the first scan's pages are monochrome. Its text resolution is lower, so the digital edition stays anchored to the first scan, but it carries one page the first scan lacks: the "Recording problems" troubleshooting sheet, now transcribed into the digital edition with the rest of chapter XI. The second scan is mirrored alongside the first. The schematic — chapter XII — is missing from both printings' scans; the hunt list does not shorten.

Update, August 20: the hunt list shortens after all. A two-sheet scan of the X-150D schematic diagram — the chapter XII page missing from both printings' scans — was sourced separately, cleaned up, and is now mirrored in the library as its own document and reproduced as its own section of the digital edition. Sheet one carries the cross-field head assembly and the record/playback amplifier boards; sheet two the bias oscillator, power supply, and motor circuit — and, in its margin, the factory transistor list, with the 2SC458 seated at Tr5 in the machine's own schematic. The top of the hunt list now reads simply: an original manual.
